Best Car insurance companies

For most motorists, insurance is little more than a necessary evil. You have to stay covered by law – so the only question remaining is which provider to opt for.

Competition is fiercer than ever for those policy pounds, so it’s a potential insurance minefield; there are dozens of brands, offering different levels of cover, with myriad caveats...

But thanks to your overwhelming response to our annual Driver Power owner satisfaction survey, Auto Express have once again been able to cut through the small print to publish a definitive list of the best and worst insurers.

Position                           Make                                      Overall rating
1                              NFU Mutual                                         86.74%
2                              IAM Surety                                          85.98%
3                        Royal and Sun Alliance                               84.76%
4                                  Frizzell                                              84.50%
5                                  Ageas                                               82.95%
6                                   RIAS                                               81.09%
7                           Liverpool Victoria                                    79.61%
8                                  SAGA                                              79.47%
9                              Co-operative                                        78.40%
10                           Marks & Spencer                                  78.09%

How are our results calculated?

The results are based on nearly 29,000 readers' ratings out of five in a number of categories – which now includes speed to settle claims, as well as the usual scores for communication, helpfulness and attitude, value for money and overall service.

These are averaged to produce overall percentage scores for each insurer. That then determines its final ranking in this year’s top 40 league table, which you will find in our Driver Power 2012 special issue, out 22 August.
