Esurance launches 'What if' calculator

Esurance, the San Francisco-based direct-to-consumer car and home insurer, launched a new online tool that lets users see how various events affect car insurance premiums.

The "What if Calculator" gives a personalized estimate for customers to see how such factors as accident claims, traffic tickets, new vehicles and moving to a different ZIP code in the same state would raise or lower their rates.

Esurance customers can access the tool by logging into their policy on the Esurance site and clicking the "Policy Info" tab.

Car insurance rates are based in part on all these factors -- where the car is garaged, the customer's driving record and the type of car driven. Other changes can also impact rates and would not be reflected in the calculation, such as discounts and recent policy changes.

The tool is provided for informational purposes only. Actual changes to the policy are not made when data is entered. The amount of time it takes for tickets to impact a consumer's rate varies by ticket type and by state, the company said.
